With the drop in temperature during the winter, it’s all too easy to hibernate indoors for months on end. Here are 4 fun, outdoor activities to keep you active this winter:
1. Skating
This is an activity that can be done indoors or out. An indoor rink is a great place to learn and once you are ready, you can venture outside. Many rinks have skates to rent so it can be a low-cost activity.
In 30 minutes of moderate skating, you can burn up to 238 calories [1].
2. Snowshoeing
Like hiking, but on top of the snow! Snowshoeing is a family-friendly activity that allows you to enjoy the beauty of the winter. If you don’t own a pair of snowshoes, many local hills and parks offer rentals – a perfect way to try the sport and see if it’s for you!
In 30 minutes of moderate snowshoeing, you can burn up to 272 calories. [1]
3. Cross-Country Skiing
While cross-country skiing does require equipment, many Nordic recreation areas offer rental gear. While many experienced cross-country skiers prefer to forge their own path through the backcountry, keep in mind that skiing on groomed trails takes less effort than breaking a trail through the forest.
In 30 minutes of moderate pace cross country skiing (on a groomed trail) you will burn up to 306 calories. [1]
4. Sledding
Grab your toboggan and hit the hills for some fun! Flying down the hill takes no effort; it’s the walking back up again where you’ll be burning calories.
In 30 minutes of sledding, you can burn up to 240 calories. [1]
To make your outdoor experience more enjoyable, it’s important to dress appropriately for the temperature. My number one tip for outdoor comfort? Dress in layers! Layers will allow you to regulate how warm you are based on your activity level. The more active you are the fewer layers you’ll need. The less active you are, the more layers you’ll want to have on.
Any of these 4 great winter activities are sure to keep you active while enjoying some of the best qualities the season has to offer. Be safe and have fun outdoors this winter!
