Resveratrol is a stilbenoid, a type of natural phenol, and a phytoalexin produced naturally by several plants in response to injury or when the plant is under attack by pathogens such as bacteria or fungi. Resveratrol has been shown to activate sirtuins, compounds that may increase cell survival. Calorie restriction, which was observed in animal research, and activation of SIRT1, a deacetylase enzyme that regulates the activity of several transcriptional factors and  enzymes responsive to nutrient availability, have both been proposed as mechanisms for resveratrol's lifespan-extending effect.
