The daily magnesium requirement for healthy adults has not been clearly established. The recommended daily allowance in Canada for adults is 250 mg. Magnesium is a mineral that is critical for energy production and metabolism, muscle contraction, nerve impulse transmission and bone mineralization. Magnesium is the second most abundant intracellular cation (positively charged ion) in the human body and is involved in more than 300 enzymatic reactions. Among the reactions catalyzed by these enzymes are fatty acid synthesis, protein synthesis and glucose metabolism.
