The branched chain amino acids Leucine, Isoleucine and Valine are three of the eight essential amino acids that the human body must receive in food, as these amino acids cannot be synthesized in the liver. The combination of these three essential amino acids makes up approximately 1/3 of skeletal muscle in the human body, and plays an important role in protein synthesis. Besides having a potential benefit for healthy adults, brained-chain amino acids (BCAA) may show improvement in chronic wasting diseases, such as chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD). The current evidence suggests that BCAA is possibly an effective treatment of Anorexia, Hepatic Encephalopathy, Mania, muscle breakdown, and Tardive dyskinesia (involuntary, repetitive movements).
