MSM (methylsulfonylmethane) is a naturally occurring compound found in all living organisms. This biologically active form of organic sulfur is abundant in green plants such as field horsetail (Equisetum arvense), certain species of algae, fruits, vegetables, grains, and both bovine and human adrenal glands, milk, and urine. It is an odourless metabolite of dimethyl sulfoxide (DMSO). MSM is a source of sulfur for cysteine and methionine. Incorporation of MSM-derived sulfur into methionine is regulated by a limiting step involving micro-organisms in the intestinal lumen. Supplemental MSM crosses the blood-brain barrier.
