NOW L-Arginine

Supports protein and creatine synthesis, nitric oxide production and the detoxification of ammonia in the body. L-Arginine is the substrate for the synthesis of nitric oxide (NO), a cell-derived relaxing factor that is essential for regulating vascular tone and blood flow. It also supports the manufacture of creatine, an energy substrate for muscles. 95% of creatine is located in the skeletal muscle. L-Arginine is popular among body builders for these reasons and also because the intake of arginine has been shown to increase anabolic hormones like human growth hormone (hGH) and glucagon. More study is needed to show conclusively positive results in exercise performance among healthy individuals, but the role of L-Arginine in supporting protein and creatine synthesis, boosting nitric oxide levels and neutralizing ammonia (a toxic by-product of energy production in the body) are undisputed. NOW L-Arginine 1000 mg tablets are our highest potency Arginine supplement. The L-Arginine used in this product is Pharmaceutical Grade (USP).

L-Arginine was first isolated in 1886 and some fifty years later scientists learned that L-Arginine is needed to create urea, a waste product that is necessary for toxic ammonia to be removed from the body. Shortly thereafter, they also discovered that L-Arginine is needed to make creatine. Arginine is considered a semi-essential amino acid because even though the body normally makes enough of it, supplementation is sometimes needed. For example, people with protein malnutrition, excessive ammonia production, excessive lysine intake, burns, infections, peritoneal dialysis, rapid growth, urea synthesis disorders, or sepsis may not have enough arginine. Symptoms of arginine deficiency include poor wound healing, hair loss, skin rash, constipation, and fatty liver. Arginine is one of the most versatile amino acids in human cells, serving as a precursor for the synthesis not only of proteins but also of nitric oxide, urea, polyamines, proline, glutamate, creatine and agmatine.
