Plant Sterols, or phytosterols, are natural compounds found in plant cell membranes with a molecular structure similar to that of cholesterol. Because of this similar structure, researchers discovered that these sterols can compete with cholesterol for absorption within the human gut. This competition reduces cholesterol absorption and thereby helps to maintain healthy cholesterol levels. Decreased cholesterol absorption (50-85%) has been shown in both ileostomy and healthy patients given plants sterols and increased fecal elimination of cholesterol has been observed following consumption of phytosterol esters. More than 200 sterols and sterol-related compounds have been discovered to date. Beta-sitosterol is the most commonly found phytosterol in the human diet, accounting for approximately 65% of dietary intake. Campesterol and Stigmasterol are other commonly-occurring phytosterols and account for approximately 30 % and 3% of dietary intake, respectively. NOW Beta-Sitosterol Plant Sterol softgels contain Cardio-Aid Plant Sterol Esters which provide a combination of the esterified forms of the three most common phytosterols. Plant sterol esters have better solubility as compared to free, or unesterified, plant sterols, so they are more effective at competing with cholesterol for absorption to help lower LDL and total blood cholesterol. Our plant sterols are suspended in a therapeutic base of purified fish oil.
Adult Dosage: Take 1 Softgel 3 times daily with food.
